3 Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving

Going to a Thanksgiving feast can be tough on your resolve to stick with healthy eating. But it doesn’t have to be. You just need to arm yourself with a few tools and you’ll find your Thanksgiving event to be even more enjoyable.

Here are three tips for staying on track with your health goals while enjoying Thanksgiving:

  1. Make sure there are dishes available that are in line with how you want to eat.

For example, you may be eating non-dairy or carb-free. Whether you check-in with the host regarding the menu, or simply bring dishes that you feel good eating, this will allow you to stay on track with your goals.

2. Plan ahead and decide what you will eat.

When you have made a decision on what foods you’ll eat, it saves you from doing battle in your mind and feeling the guilt and torment over foods that are sitting in front of you. You may decide you’re going to eat turkey, veggies, potatoes and one slice of pecan pie. Then when you go to the party, you won’t have to waffle back and forth on what to do because you already have a plan.

3. Identify your triggers and rewards. Then change the behavior in between your craving and your desired reward.

Think about what things trigger your cravings. Maybe you crave eating more because you’re bored. Maybe it’s because you want to be entertained.

Then, consider what it is that you’re hoping to gain from eating more. Is it happiness? Or perhaps less boredom?

What other things or activities can give you what it is you really want, besides eating more food? Maybe engaging in conversation would make you feel happy. Or playing with your nieces and nephews. Decide now what activities you will try when a craving hits.

This way you will still be rewarded with the feelings you desire (like happiness or less boredom). But you’ll feel good about your choice. And you’ll feel less guilty than if you fell off track with your health goals.
